Marbles, an online video game featuring an addictive game mechanic, is now the most popular game online with a 10% market share, a report said on Wednesday.
The report by consultancy NPD Group said Marbles was the No. 1 digital game with 3.6 million active users in the US and Canada, with an estimated 10 million in India and another 1 million in China.
It said the game’s audience also includes those aged between five and 69, as well as adults.
“In the past, the most sought-after game for gamers was probably an online-only game like League of Legends, but Marbles is a big deal in India,” NPD India analyst and head of mobile and digital services Sandeep Mehta said.
“We believe that Marbles’ gameplay and social sharing tools are going to play a big role in the growth of the gaming ecosystem.”
Its popularity will only continue to increase as more and more games are made and distributed digitally.
“A few weeks ago, we saw that the game ‘The King of Tokyo’ has more than 100 million monthly active users.
The game has also seen huge success in Japan and China, where Marbles has been a huge hit,” Mehtam said.
The company has raised about $20 million (Rs 22.9 crore) in funding from Sequoia Capital and Sequoian Capital Partners, with another round due to be announced on Friday.
Marbles was released in November last year for Android devices.
It has also been developed by Chinese game studio Giant Squid.
